Fast Food and Inspiration (aka We’re Back!)
After more than eight months without an episode, Beyond the Box is finally back! In this very unique episode (what a way to return, huh?) Ray and Steve actually sat down together in person with a small portable recorder in a fast-food restaurant and talked about a wide variety of topics, including the inspiration of Scripture and reflections on a talk they had just attended by Bart Ehrman.
Despite the country music playing in the background (and turned up quite loudly for the last part of the podcast, possibly due to some unhappy customers sitting nearby!), we hope you enjoy this conversation and the return of Ray and Steve to podcasting.
Here’s to more regular podcasts again!

Wow, it was so great to see BEYOND THE BOX pop up on my RSS feed tonight. I was wondering if we would ever hear from you two again.
It was neat to hear you two discussing topics that we have been discussing here as well lately (we meaning my husband and I and the church we meet with).
The music in background was distracting but we made it through the whole discussion. I will probably listen again tomorrow with a pen and paper handy for notes and thoughts.
Welcome back Steve and Ray.
From your “two listeners”, Pam and Wes

Good to stick you guys in my ears again. Looking forward to listenting to this episode.

Pam, yeah, the music can be distracting. It sure was to us while we were recording! 😉 But I’m glad you were able to still follow the discussion. We had no idea while recording if it would even work, but figured it was a fun way to “come back” to the podcast.

Oh, your, God! You’re back!!! 🙂 Happy day.
I’ve read “Misquoting Jesus” by Dr. Ehrman this past summer. It was quite interesting to learn about the history of the Bible. I haven’t read “God’s Problem” yet, but the problem of evil/suffering is the main reason I gave up Christianity as well.
It’s good to hear you podcasting again.

Random thought: McDonalds food and country music… Hell IS real.

LOL, Sid. Good point about hell! 😉 Glad you’re still around to listen to us.

Hey everyone!
Hi Pam,
Sounds like an interesting bunch of peeps you guys meet with. I sure would like to eavesdrop on those conversations.
John,
It’s good to be in your ears again 🙂
Sid,
McDonald’s + Country Music = hell? That equation might not be far off 😉
It’s interesting to hear that the problem of evil/suffering is the main reason for you walking away from Christianity. Me thinks we might have to do an episode on that 🙂

1) SId what gives? You can’t tell a brother when BTB is back? Pffft
2) I too don’t know where I am, but for me its not just text its in faith, doctrine, and belief. It is reassuring To hear you bring common sense and truth to the discussion of spirituality.

“On the Road with Steve and Ray”. I love the concept! Next time visit a golf course for your mobile podcast. It would be much quieter. And you could do the entire episode in hushed golf announcer voices.
I loved listening in on the podcast. What I walked away with is 1) “the gospel writers were not historians”. This may really help me as I spend time with a friend who is struggling with contradictions in the Bible. And 2) it’s ok to admit that there are glaring inaccuracies in the Bible. That’s always been the elephant in the room no one mentions.
So thank you. And it’s great to have you guys back in my car while I’m driving to work. Keep ’em coming!

Big C,
Thanks! Just curious..what do you mean by it’s in faith, doctrine & belief? Great to talk with you again 🙂
Chip,
Thanks Chip! I was kind of concerned that people wouldn’t understand where we were coming from or (for myself) what I was trying to say.
I like the idea of the golf course! Only problem is I would spend the entire time chasing my ball 🙂
